BMX Stem

You can buy a BMX stem for $10 or $50. Most stems fall into two categories, frontload or topload. You can get a forged allow stem that is CNC machined and hollowed out in the center and trimmed on the sides to reduce weight. Some higher end stems are made from billet 6061-T6 aluminum. Some have knee-friendly rounded edges and will have a two piece front clamp to reduce weight even further.

Most stems will have dimensions such a reach of 52mm, a rise of 31.8mm, a stack height of 29.2mm, bolts being metric hollow and a weight of around ten ounces for those higher-priced special machined weight-reducing stems. For those lower priced stems which will do the job for most recreational riders on a budget, they will be alloy without the fancy aluminum or being CNC machined.

BMX Stem Installation

When you install your BMX stem on your bike, make sure you lightly grease the threads on the bolts to make the bolts last longer, prevent seizing and strippage and so you will not get any squeaking. Grease only the threads, not the underside of the bollt head - otherwise you can easily overtighten the stem bolts which can possibly cause bent and/or stripped bolts. When you are done greasing the bolts, give the two stem clamp bolts a few turns onto the stem. Now get rid of any excess grease or lubricant on the stem clamping area. For more step by step directions, go to How to Install a BMX Stem.
