BMX Pedals

There are two different types of BMX pedals. There are flat pedals that go on a normal flat bottom skate shoes like DCs and Vans. You also have clip pedal that require a special shoe to clip into. Clip pedals are more geared toward racing bikes whereas flat pedals are more for freestyle bikes.

In order to install your BMX pedals, you will need a pedal wrench, from your local bike shop or an Allen wrench. If you do not have a pedal wrench, then you can use an adjustable wrench or 15mm wrench, but a pedal wrench is preferred because it is less likely to damage to the pedals and will give you more leverage. You will use an Allen wrench if your pedals lack wrench flats, that will fit into the spindle, usually 6mm.

Installing BMX Pedals, Cranks and Bearings

Before installing your BMX pedals, be sure to grease them first. Install the right pedal first. Usually the pedals will be marked with a R or L for right or left. You will thread the pedal clockwise by hand, making sure on the right crank arm to line up the threads so that the pedal will not be cross-threaded. You will do the same with the left pedal, except you will hand tighten it by turning it counterclockwise. Then you will use your wrench to finish tightening the pedals to the correct torque specification.
