BMX Cranks

When buying BMX cranks, you need to know what kind you have on your bike because there are several different types of BMX cranksets out there.  For example, there are three piece cranksets, where the arm is one piece that bolts onto the bottom bracket spindle, the other crank arm and the spindle. Three piece BMX cranks are usually stronger than one piece cranks.

There are also different size bottom bracket shells. You need to know what size frame you have and if you have Spanish, Mid, American or a European shell in order to install the crankset. There are also two piece and one piece cranksets where one continuous piece of single cast or forged piece of steel, that has both the crank arms and spindle, goes through the frame and out the other side. BMX cranks are sold by length, ranging from as short as 135mm to as long as 190mm. The two most common crank lengths are 175mm and 180mm. As a general rule of thumb, the taller you are the longer the crank arm you may want.

How to Install BMX Cranks/Cranksets Shafts

After you install your BMX crank, and have set the arm spacing, make sure there is not any horizontal movement, side to side, and it turns smoothly.  If your crank arms do not turn smoothly, an adjustment will need to be made by lengthening the inner spacer distance between the bearing cups. If you are horizontal movement in the crank arms, then adjust them by adding a spacing washer or pull the arms further onto the spindle.
