What is special about BMX bikes? They typically have 20 inch rims which are deeply grooved and knobby. The tread helps maintain traction on dirt tracks and racing courses. There are smaller sizes which are made for younger children. A bmx bike with 12 inch rims is suitable for children under 8 who are just starting out. Older kids and pre-teens will feel comfortable with 16 inch rims before graducating to a 20 inch.

There are two main types of bmx bikes, racing and freestyle. The racing style was born out of the desire to imitate motorcycle motorcross racing, hence bicycle motorcross or BMX. Freestyle is divided further into several disciplines, such as park, vert, flatland and trails and involves doing complex tricks and jumping. Most people get a freestyle bike unless they will be committing to racing competitions.
